NUKO Programs

Nanaimo Unique Kids Organization has four programs for children and youth with neuro-developmental disabilities.

Our Day Program has an academic focus, offered in partnership with parents and professionals and based on an Individual Education Plan (I.E.P.) overseen by a special education teacher. Children learn at their own pace and are supported by tutors, a teacher and, at times, volunteer staff. Our student to staff ratio is 2 to1.

Our Community Therapeutic Recreation Program allows students to socialize, play, interact and explore their community as well as facilities and events in other areas and communities. The program includes such activities as mini-golf, museum visits, hiking, swimming, entertainment experiences, etc.

Our Lifeskills Program helps children and youth gain valuable self-help and independence skills. Not all children with neuro-developmental disabilities have the capacity to complete a traditional academic schedule. Some may complete their school years unable to function independently. Lifeskills allow them to meet as many of their own needs as possible while encouraging them to contribute skills and service to others.

Our Summer Camps are held in July and August each year, as donations allow. The summer camps give children and youth increased opportunities to socialize, explore, stay physically fit and active, while learning new skills and retaining previous development. Children with neuro-developmental disabilities need daily structure for maximum health and wellness.
